South Asian Therapy
With Vineel Maharaj, LMFT, LCSW
I'm a Silicon Valley therapist dedicated to helping South Asians navigate the unique pressures that come with our culture, families, and expectations.
I understand these challenges because I've lived them myself.
Do you look successful on the outside but struggle on the inside?
Are you carrying stress, guilt, or anxiety that nobody seems to understand?
Do you struggle to set boundaries without guilt?
Many South Asians grow up balancing multiple worlds. Family expectations, cultural values, career pressure, and personal goals can all pull you in different directions.
You may feel responsible for everyone else's happiness. Maybe you've spent years comparing yourself to family, friends, or impossible standards and wondering why success still doesn't feel like enough.
Whether you're Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Guyanese, Fijian Indian, Trinidadian, South African or navigating multiple cultural identities, your background influences how you experience stress, relationships, self-worth, and mental health.
South Asian Clients Come To Me With:
High family expectations
Difficulty setting boundaries
Anxiety
Identity conflicts between western and eastern culture
Trouble sleeping
Sadness
Irritability
Stress in the body
Worry nazar lag gai
Many of my clients are successful professionals in tech, medicine, law, finance, and other high-pressure careers. Yet career success hasn't translated into peace of mind.
South Asian Therapy With Me
Together, we'll identify what's causing tension in your life, understand the patterns underneath it, and create a practical plan for moving forward.
My style is collaborative and actionable. I'm not the therapist who sits back and asks endless questions without direction. We work together to understand what's happening, and create strategies you can use between sessions.
“Therapy offers freedom from what burdens you.”
Modalities I Use
-
Helps challenge perfectionism, self-criticism, and beliefs that keep you trapped in cycles of stress and comparison.
-
Builds emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills so family conflict, work pressure, and anxiety don't feel overwhelming.
-
Helps create momentum when you know something needs to change but feel stuck making it happen.
-
Helps process painful experiences that continue affecting your confidence, relationships, and sense of self.
-
Quickly reduces the emotional intensity of difficult memories and experiences.
-
Helps practice difficult conversations, boundary setting, and navigating family dynamics before they happen in real life.
-
Creates an environment where you can explore difficult experiences without judgment or criticism.
“Many clients come in trying to optimize the pressure cooker. Together, we focus on breaking the patterns that created it.”
Balance Your Culture And Self
You can care about your family while still building a life that feels like your own.
After Therapy With Me, Clients Report:
Feeling calmer
Less muscle tension
Stronger boundaries
Confidence
Healthier and more stable relationships
Self-acceptance
Better coping skills
Clearer direction
Many clients tell me they finally feel comfortable doing the thing they've been scared to do for years.
About Vineel Maharaj, LMFT
As a South Asian therapist from Silicon Valley, I understand the challenges that come with balancing cultural expectations, family relationships, achievement, and personal fulfillment.
I've spent years helping people work through anxiety, trauma, identity questions, and the pressure to always be more.
My therapy is designed for people who want both understanding and action. We'll explore what's driving your stress, identify patterns that no longer serve you, and create practical steps toward change. I want therapy to help you feel better, not just understand why you feel bad.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent years in startups, marketing, and entrepreneurship. I was a co-founder, chief marketing officer, and helped build a company that was eventually acquired. Many of my clients appreciate working with someone who understands both cultural pressure and the realities of ambitious careers.
Outside of therapy, I spend time with my wife and our baby. When I have the time, I enjoy old-school hip hop, lifting weights, personal finance, and spending time with longtime friends.
Availability: I provide in-person therapy for clients in Menlo Park, and telehealth sessions throughout California. Weekend appointments available.
My practice works exclusively with individual adults. I do not offer couples, family, group sessions or court mandated therapy. I do not write letters or recommendations for court.
